Went tree shopping in Flagstaff today. Home Depot had all their trees 50% off. They had a few A. Freemaniis, but I noticed one that was like 10ft tall with a thicc trunk that had died back halfway and back budded. I'm guessing from frost? Either way, I was planning on buying one and chopping the trunk in the parking lot anyways to fit it in my Honda Element, and the fact that it already back budded was an added bonus. I managed to get an extra $10 off. It was originally $120, so combined with the sale price, $10 half dead discount (cheap skates) and my veterans 10%, I snagged it for $44. Not sure what my next steps are. Trunk is a little over 2" and is obviously really straight. I haven't had a chance to dig into the top roots to see what I'm in for. I'll post pics of the roots tomorrow after work as I got home pretty late, hence the crappy low light photo.

I was wrong, almost but not quite 2" trunk. But that graft mark is like 3" and who knows what's going on underneath. It definitely needs to be repotted in the spring judging by all the surface roots.

My question is would I be able to do an air layer now since I'm planning on cutting it back further in the spring anyways? I know it's late in the season, but it doesn't get down to freezing here for 3 more months.
