Had some time to spare during the day so went to home depot for fun. Every tree there was 50% but I don't usually bother but for some reason I looked at what they had and found this =)

A Redspire flowering pear tree. Small white flowers, small fruit. Not bad for 18 bucks!

It looks like it might be grafted (bark gets smooth above the rough bark). Almost every tree I see at Home Depot is grafted, particularly the fruit and ornamental trees. You might want to do some research and find out what these are grafted on typically.

In any case you will have to so something about the graft sooner or later because it will effect how the trunk looks and not for the better I'm afraid.

Good observation! Basically I'm not keeping anything from the stuff above. It's got lots of new growth on the old trunk (stock) and nothing above since I chopped it. The foliage still looks like some kind of flowering pear except the leaves are smaller which works in my favor. I am just hoping the flowers are still white which most pear trees are anyway.

The base may not even be a pear. Pear trees are grafted to some weird things like quince. Sometimes they are grafted to a middle piece which is grafted to a base.

Interesting, could be a mystery tree

I really like those little red fruits. Are they pear or crab apples? I have never seen pears like that. Now I have got to go find this tree too. But you probably won't get fruits like that from the original stock. From the label, the original grower/wholesale nursery is also in Oregon. Maybe it is not too far from Portland. Maybe you could call them up and ask them what the stock was.

It is possible that those fruits are not from this tree though. The way the box stores display & store the trees, most overlap with other species.

I believe the little red fruit inside the pot is a crabapple fruit from the tree sitting next to that one :). I did look up that nursery and couldn't find it in eagle creek OR. It'll be interesting to know what the stock is but leaves look like a pear. Flowers will tell me if i am right.
