Hiya Folks,

does anyone know ?
Or can point me to paper to read on-line.

We did a test in Biology in school years ago. Stuck a weed - shining bush - translucent plant about 1'
tall into water with a dye. Within 24 hrs or a little less the dye was at the top of the plant.

Will fertiliser move this fast ?

Not sure how to call it up on Google, and have tried.
Any help ?
Thanks in Advance.
Good Day

Depends on so many variables. I started to list them all and realized they were almost endless.

There is a huge difference between species. And you have to take into consideration environmental factors, as well as the type and action of the fertilizer.

I'll bet a general water soluble fertilizer would be taken up very quickly (within a day) by a quick growing tree like a willow. However a solid organic fertilizer on the surface of soil of a black pine will slowly break down and slowly be absorbed by the tree over the course of weeks/months.

Try Google Scholar and searching terms like "fertilizer", "nutrient", "uptake".

Here's a basic starting point:

Chapin, F.S., III, 1980. The mineral nutrition of wild plants. Annu. Rev. Ecol. Syst. 11:233–260.

“The rate of nutrient absorption by a root depends upon both nutrient supply to the root surface and active absorption by root cortical cells. Nutrient supply to the root surface depends upon (a) soil solution concentration, (b) buffering power of the soil (i.e. capacity of soil exchangeable pools to replenish the soil solution as nutrients are absorbed), and (c) rate of nutrient movement to the root surface by diffusion or by mass flow of soil water.”

@hemmy,

thanks a million!

Sorce --------- remember we also use - aged compost - and tried compost tea which didn't work - but our combination of
inorganic and organic fertiliser does work [ our aged compost is around the same as rabbit manure ]
But what the hey ---------------- go pro :)

Thanks Bnut, trying to see how much one wastes with triple and double strength fertiliser applications.
Good Day

I know I might be starting sumthin here but do you base this on anything more than your hopes and dreams?

Based on the fact that if they can put Bullshit ingredients in food and not disclose...
Why would they waste money on shit like this that doesn't matter at all!?

Along with plenty of observation.

The only thing that may get started is some rants on how, ESPECIALLY NOW, big companies with lobbyists are tickling and lubing are bung holes for the big slide!

Horticulturally though....

My conditions, as recently ranted on, aren't like most.

I'm not a scientist but in my yard, the way I do things....
Chemicals just haven't proven anything but a waste of $.
Where I have realized excellent growth with Garden Tone, which smells like shit!

And fish emulsion, which smells like my thumb after a good day on the water!

I watched a grizzly bear thing about the fish they fert the forest with.

I have enough recently pulled seedlings of the same size to run a decent test on.

Because you are realizing on top of way cooler than you....

And smarter.....

And more awake....

I am also going to make better trees than you....

And give them away because...
See 1.

I wouldn't have attacked if you didn't clearly ask for it.

My Olive branch is right here...

Hopefully it takes the inorganic fertilizer up fast. Because 24 hours later the water comes washing through.
By the way,I only use inorganic fertilizer.
