Rough ballpark, I just counted around 12 rings/years.

I came up with 15 or 16 rings in a quick count.

I think about at 8 years old it was stressed and formed a few very narrow rings. I still come up with 15. It is interesting isn't it. Sure do wish I was holding it under a glass in my hands. Maybe I am seeing it wrong. I can certainly see 12 very distinctive zones, but I am guessing this plant is 16 years old from seed. Just a guess is all.

Take a slice, sand it smooth and paint it with clear nail polish, then count the dark rings which are the winter/dry season.

9?
Counting rings is not an accurate way to tell the age of a trunk. Many trees can grow more than one ring in a season. Summer drought, fire and other stress will cause growth to slow and give an extra darker ring.

Dunno. But it brings up something I just thought of.
If the thing keeps growing into that leader, will the rings on the cut continue?

It will get closer than any other method, of which there are none.
