Basically I have a nursery stock yew I worked on at the end of May in a workshop and we created deadwood and cut maybe 70% foliage off. Since then it seems to have grown really healthy (I think, this is my first yew). I want to encourage the lower growth, especially the buds lower on the trunk to push, I was told to do this I need to cut some of the long stronger growth.
I however have a few questions about this.
1. I remember seeing that with yews if you see a terminal bud it's too late to cut them. It seems to me that the new growth doesn't have them yet but I am unsure as I don't really know what I am looking for. Like a regular bud but on the end?
2. Like I said, when I got this we cut it hard, would trimming now weaken it before winter? It's seems to have grown nicely throughout the summer and has growth everywhere but I'm not sure. I live in a country with long winters. Zone 6a-5b ish. Would it be too late for my area? According the an interactive map of my nation I found, First frost is typically around Oct 21-31 if that helps.
3. How exactly would I trim it if I were to?
Any advice would be awesome.
P.S. Not sure if the pics are any good or in focus, going blind and can't really tell. So if they're not I will try and get better ones.
