I am from Zambia. Our climate here is :
Winter lowest temperature is 6 degree Celsius, which is 42 F
We are at altitude level 1500 meters.
No hot temperatures like in Europe or California...our summer is cool. Heat in Japan now is 42 C
All pines are outside on full sun.
I am at school at Taisho en in Japan now at international bonsai school. I bought one white pine dwarf variety...yatsubusas cousin myiogi.
I would like to buy some more black and white pine, but I am not sure if they will survive here.
Is there any one that has grown white pine for longer than three years in a place that has winter temperatures not lower than mine.
What is important is the winter temperature....heat they can survive, but not sure how much winter resting temperature they need to do well and I don't plan to build any cold rooms.
Any advise on which species I should not buy will be greatly appreciated, since I like them all and might end up buying unsuitable ones.
I shall post when I go back home in a month time all the things I learned here.

My experience and understanding is that in order for white pine to flourish they need a true winter dormancy. Colder than 42F for at least a month or two. I would not recommend white pine for you. Black pine is likely more of your speed.

Thanks! I like them so much..... I am just hopping that someone there has managed them....so I can buy some....I am still praying someone has managed to grow them...
He he he!

Neli, you could get a cheap Japanese white pine sapling to see how it would fare in your climate before you get a nice piece of stock to work on. Better to take a chance on something cheap than to kill something nice.

I have had a large white pine imported from southern Japan for 13 years now. I am in a warm area, but my winter climate is still probably much cooler that yours...We typically get in the low 20's and sometimes in the teens...I am not sure what the average temp is but definitely cooler than yours.

That said I feel like it is still too warm for my white pine...some years more so than others. The last two winters have been very mild and I think my pine is paying the price...just not thriving as it has in other years.

So, if I were you, I would take a pass on the white pines...how about a sweet juniper instead:)

The Question:

Why would someone in Japan at study in the most prestigious bonsai nursery seek help from a bonsai forum full of ametuers based in California?

I have a white pine grafted on black pine. It does well in my 100degree f. Summers. You get the nice white pine foliage on the hardy black pine stock. It's a very nice compromise. We have very mild winters where it might only freeze a few times.

Neli, I think it would be best to ask oyakata this question. I have a feeling it will be too warm on your climate but since you are there, I would ask your master.

Wow Eric back to my last post. Might humble your opinions. An edit might be in order. Sorry neli for such responses are out of disbelief and ignorance please don't stop posting and posting pics off the iPad is easy here. I know you have been trouble posting pics from JAPAN lately.

Sorry neli. I look forward to your posts of JAPAN at the other forum. Thanks again for giving insight into your journeys and I apologize for trying to get you to post here. I thought it was a good idea as a easy idea for posting techniques and, pics and styling from Japan, but I guess I was wrong as the responses have been very disrespectful. Once against sorry and thanks for teaching and sharing what you have Learned.

Calm down man, I was just joking around... You have to admit the post was a little confusing!

Sorry if we offended anybody... I am still siding with Smoke here- maybe she should ask these questions to her teacher?

Real answer to the question- I just don't see a LWP working in that kind of climate, but there have to be dozens of trees that would!

She lives In Africa I know more about her climate In Texas than he does. What he knows more than me is everything else. I hope she will post more as she is on a great journey that I hope she continues to share with us. She is just asking questions that he might not know as most nurseries specialize in what grows great in their climate. I tried to get her to post progression pics and other techniques here, because its easy on an iPad. Just wish people would not jump the gun on people. She has lots to teach and share with us in the years to come. Hope you guys did not insult to the point of no return. The worst part is she is taking all of these pics of the nursery in JAPAN with an iPad. She can't easily post them here .... sad

You are absolutely correct. I have looked at the blog at the address you provided. This is what I deduced from the post and the blog:

I find it hard to believe that the same person wrote both. I find syntax and puctuation to be very good as well as sentance structure on the blog. I am not the sharpest drill in the drawer, but even I can sense some help on the blog. Then as I delved further, such as the pines section, I find it is all reblogs from Bonsai Tonight and Brian Van Fleet.

You seem to have a connection with Neli, and you seem to think her contributions to this community can stand for something. I would think that a first impression we have been shown would have been started with an introduction from you.

What Gives?
