I can't tell if this is a fungal problem or possibly old leaves

It could be seasonal but no way of knowing without a location.

Agree. So many factors that could be causing this and many of them environmental. Your location can give so many clues that will help other members give better answers.

With no other background info I'd say the leaves are just tired after a long summer which is entirely normal for deciduous trees.
Some could be caused from just a fraction too much sun or occasional shortage of water which is really hard to get spot on with small containers and trying for maximum sun.
Water quality can be another cause of leaf problems. If using tap water you can check the local authority water reports to see what pH and dissolved minerals your water contains.

It is probably season. In any event it will be dropping its leaves very soon.
