Can anyone ID this and would it be a good candidate? My in laws are bout to dig it up and and throw it away.

How does the rest of the tree look? Curious, are the underside of the leaves silvery?

They trimmed most of the branches off all they left was the one in the pic. I'll snap a few mor and post them

They are a common landscape shrub/hedge in California. I'm not really sure about its suitability for bonsai but they don't strike me as being the best candidate.

I have no idea what it is, but here is a few things I seen first it seems to have a decent trunk which has signs at the top of new buds appearing so you know its going to backbud. The leaves are pretty big, but that could just be the way the picture was taken. If they are going to dig it up why not save it from the garbage and have some fun seeing what you can do with it? At worst you will kill it and have something to work while learning from your mistakes and just maybe you will make something nice out of it for free.

Here what's left of it. It's about 2ft tall and 1/2 inch thick. It gas some buds ready to go mid trunk.

Agree with Tim. I have them in my yard. Common name is Mock Orange.
