Found this interesting tree/shrub growing in a boot on a mountain trail. Mt Lemmon has these growing all over it. I live in Tucson,Az. I don't know what it is, but it's pretty. Maybe bonsai material.

That's an Arizona Madrone a.k.a Strawberry Tree....
Not sure if they can be used for bonsai.
I've seen some beautiful ones up near Parker Canyon.... Lots of movement.
And love the red bark!

Sounds like you need to go see your local Ag Extension Agent.

So I contacted the Parks person that we have on base and she talked to one of her contacts and got me the OK to "collect a specimen to study". I am in the clear for having the Manzanita. and they are possible for bonsai just really finicky. I am going to try to grow it on a interesting rock I have.
