Hello,

Someone gave me a gift that they believed was a Larch but looking at it I am thinking its more likely a cedrus (and hard to overwinter for me ........)

Anyone care to share their thoughts?

Probably not a Larch, but how nice that someone gifted you with a tree!

Enjoy your journey with this tree.

hmmm, not a pine definitely. And I think... too long shoots for cedrus.

Single needles, old growth stays on the tree..
Not a larch, not a pine. That would make it a spruce?

thanks for the replies folks. watching it grow to try and figure out what it is. I need to know before the fall how to overwinter it as -30C will be hard on it if its a cedrus....

well thats encouraging. I guess I will find out in the fall when / if the needles change color. I am still slightly weary of assuming its a Larch as it has a bit of a resin-ish smell to the branches, that my Tamarack doesn't have...but I suppose its possibly a different variety or genetics. In any case, thanks all for the opinions as always

To me, the green shoots that are going UP/vertical (verses horizonal) off of the branches says larch. How big is it anyway?

Definitely Larch, but there are several species of Larch. If it is collected it is probably Laricina, Eastern Larch.

its less than 10 inches high. but its had a trunk chop and some work done for the movement. This is material that was gifted to me by someone well meaning so I am getting second hand info. in any case its enjoying the sun and not showing any sign of difficulties for now, I will take a full size pic shortly

Here are some new pics. Its pushing out some fresh buds and it does appear to be some kind of larch but very dissimilar to my Tamarack. Needles are much longer and also tree has more of a resin-y feel to it.

In any case the branching seems to be a bit of a mess, any tips on how (and also importantly, when.....) to clean it up?

That really looks like a larch to me; everything from the trunk/bark pattern to the needles screams it.
