I recently purchased about 16 bonsai and pre bonsai from someone taking a break from the hobby. Most of them were easy to identify but one of them even he didn't know. Apparently it was bought from someone in Louisiana and has a large stump of deadwood with one long branch near the bottom. The stems are reddish and the leaves are smooth.
I used Google lens to try to identify and it said it was poison sumac! I'd rather not have a poisonous bonsai... Anyone know what this may be?

It is not poison ivy or poison sumac. The leaves are not compound and the branching is opposite. More misinformation from Google. But I don't know exactly what it is, please post some more photos showing details.

Leaves remind me of beautyberry, but maybe a little too oval for it?

Not poison sumac.
Traits:
*Opposite leaf pattern
*Leaves are simple (not compound)
*Lanceolate, with entire margins. (Not serrated)
*Axial surface of leaves smooth, not fuzzy, with out obvious hairs. (Top of leaves, smooth)

Cephalanthus occidentalis is a definite possibility.
