Hi All,

I'm looking for your ideas. There's an interesting pine for sale, and the owner labels it as a pinus strobus (Eastern White Pine). This is a tree species you don't see much in Europe. However, I question if this is indeed an EWP. What I read and see online is that it usually has long needles and doesn't respond to bonsai techniques very well. A species that in general doesn't make good bonsai. The tree in question however does have short needles and seems to have been in bonsai cultivation for a long time. I wonder if it's a Japanese white pine on it's own roots. If any of you has any ideas I would love to hear it!

Thanks!

Ben

Nice tree! Definitely not an eastern white pine. Bark, needles and quality as a bonsai are all wrong!

Presumably it’s a Japanese white pine and someone just googled “white pine” to get the Latin name.

Does it have 5 needles per fascicle? It’s hard to tell from the pictures.

Not Pinus strobus. This is Japanese White pine.

Fabulous base and LOVE the low first branch. Does it indeed have 5 needles in bundles? Personally see straight section of trunk as very unattractive and nothing above there does anything for me (boring) and would remove all above 3rd branch or leave just a short jin there. Even if all but the first branch was removed it would still be a fabulous tree and better IMHO😌.

I'm going to get it tomorrow! Owner now says indeed it's a parviflora and that the AI tool mislabeled it. I also love the first branch and the powerful base. I'll have to see what can be done with the straight section.
