I think the key is to give it plenty of time to recover. That means not repotting it in the spring and keeping your hands off of it, until probably the fall when you can get a feel for the growth response.

The way I think about it is the roots drive top growth, the foliage drives root growth. Gotta have one strong to make the other recover.

You could consider an opposite approach to the juniper; repot it in the spring, then wait to style the foliage until fall. I’ve found junipers slow down after root pruning, so going easy during the repot, and then waiting the growing season before touching the top should set it up nice!

I love this suggestion. I need to get some pots and get after the Juniper. I’ll keep updating here.
Highly recommend this video. Eric Schrader is one of the leading teachers for young coniferous material. Nothing wrong with getting a tree in a pot, but don’t try to get it into the smallest “final” pot you can on the first repot.
