Is it a Silly idea for me to develope and use a certain "style" in all of my work this Spring to keep my work a bit unique...
What I am thinking of as I gaze upon a lot of items like wood, stone, pots is that I want to make them similar in some fashion that is "unique" to others.
After 2-3 years of learning to grow plants I just feel a need to do something different as I start several projects this Spring.
By different I mean perhaps a certain custom color scheme for pots and stands and a traditional method for showing. Maybe some very different carving from what I have seen.
I will not have enough years to share anything else so I am driven to this Artistic Style approach...
Silly or? Honest I want opinions :)

I don't know if it is "silly" or not, but usually you let the tree dictate the style and the color/type of pot rather than forcing a tree to adhere to some scheme its owner dreams up.

I don't think it's silly, but I think each plant has its own individual characteristics that have to be considered. If you try putting all of you trees in green pots, not all of them may look their best. I think it's cool that you want to develop a particular style. When I think of certain people think of certain types of trees (Ryan Neil and his ponderosa pines for example). I think it's probably healthy to have a variety of types at the beginning of the bonsai journey as it will help you to discover your own favorites. Plus I think it would be a bit boring to focus on one specific thing while ignoring others, like only having semi-cascades and ignoring informal uprights. Sorry if I'm rambling, I'm typing this out on my phone.

Yes indeed! What I am "thinking" about is doing everything to "general" guidelines as they are but using my own pantone color "schemes" for both plant pots and stands - they would all be different as required but at the same time the same... of my design and not out of the box.

You could just have your picture taken with each of your trees like many Europeans do. I find it distracting and am glad that trend hasnt taken hold in the USA. I can assure you that my ugly mug wont detract from any photos of my trees.

I needed a laugh and ty :) I just am thinking there is many ways I could display "properly" but at that same time after some years people could say "that is one of Grims'" Even if it is a sapling, forest, accent or a viewing stone...

why dont you tie a knot in the top of the leader on each tree? Hard to miss that.

I guess the whole thought process to include a personal signature via art is bad, sorry to "junk up" the forum :o

I dont think the idea is bad, just cannot think of a way to put your signature on each "product" without compromising the integtrity of that product. Afterall, we are talking about living things here, not a pen and ink, or oil on canvas. I just dont see a way to get it into each one without making a joke out of it.

Maybe have all pots made with a distinct trade mark on the front?

Maybe you could have a small flag made with the family crest. I have this one with my Family crest on it.

I think it fits my personal style......

I don't know.. I think Nick Lenz has done a pretty good job of putting his personal artistic signature on his works. Everyone has his/her personal preferences in styling trees. Some are more pronounced and/or unique than others.

Aarrrrgh! That's all I can say about that.

I already do this with my trees to set them apart from the rest. My signature is taperless trunks, crappy branching and poor pot choice.

The best personal signature you can have on your trees is that they are all beautiful and make people want to copy them. Anything less than that is kitsch, ( a gimmick) which is not necessarily a good thing. That's the problem with bonsai; there is not a whole lot of room for personal touches like what you are looking for. Bonsai is bonsai, you either make bonsai or you are making something else. That something else may or may not be accepted within the parameters of bonsai by those that do bonsai but that's the risk you take.

You actually made me think of Peter Chans book 'Bonsai Masterclass' and wishing I still had it.There was a chapter on qualities expressive of zen?,I think, that bonsai could convey like 'Naturalness','freedom from attachment'(from rules or the norm),'subtle profundity' was one.I cannot remember the rest of them, but I think I am going to search for the book since I am growing branches now.You reminded me of the 'freedom from attachment' one.

I just ordered that book just based on your comment. :)

Amazon has cheap copies:
