Is this damage just unavoidable at 90+ deg F?

Does this look like heat damage?
This tree got hurt by heat and sun earlier in the year, so now it only gets dappled morning sun, and it's in shade all day after.
The second flush looks mostly like this, tips going black.

It's frustrating I feel you!!

I don't water the leaves on my maples here. I get a decent amount of wind every day...not breezes and with the heat it's killer.

I'm sure you looked into it but you're sure it's not fungus right?

Same thing happened to mine a week ago all the second flush growth started to die back so i removed most of it and placed the tree back in the shade and its poping new buds everywhere so hopefully the next lot of growth will hold its own or its obviously something more sinister going on.
Im from the uk and i have been spraying periodically with incecticides and fungicides so i dont think my trouble was from that.
And i think that your die back is not fungus related too but im not an expert and am learning as i go.
Its probably just the fact that most maples are delicate and can be tough to keep in perfect health all year

Yeah, I have sprayed this one with a fungicide this year, at least twice.
I am beginning to think fungus though....
Maybe I need to go systemic
Or maybe I should look at some my own reference material on the shelf too, lol!
Not every leaf is like this, yet....

Flush your pots really well every day for a bit and see what happens.
You mean with water?
I water them quite thoroughly....in fact I was wondering if over-watering might be the issue, especially since its in shade now, it doesn't dry as fast.... I was gonna allow it to dry a bit....

I thought it was HEAT STROKE also lol but looking at @Smoke posts on this I figured out it was fungus, forgot the name but daconil fixed it.

I was gonna ask him but didn't want to land my ass on the ignore list :p:p:p:p I'm just having fun with that comment lol b/c I really do think his posts are fucking funny !!!

My suggestion would be to try and find some Japanese and Chinese folk for
the group. They can compare notes with all.

Before we attempted anything foreign we asked around. [ Hint - Fukien Tea ]
Good Day

My Stickroot Trident looks the same too! I'm thinking it's fungus cause my Goji experiments all are getting beat up by this white substance. Thought it was bird poops at first

Do you guys see deformed new growth as well? Some of the leaves are quite deformed on the Trident.

Should all affected leaves including deformed leaves (new and old) be removed as part of the treatment?

this kind of deformed leaf is the norm here. I don't think anyone knows how to really avoid it entirely. I'd like to try again but all these images remind me of how much people struggle just with keeping them alive. With the disclaimer that I don't know what is going on, I can tell you that people tend to blame the sun, poor humidity in the air, or water quality in the soil.

Sorry to invade your post.
There is a lot of advice on how to keep maples from browning up and getting crispy. This picture shows wet leaves. Last year I read to NOT water the whole tree. Water at the base. I thought it was bs and ignored it. All my leaves looked like what is in the picture from @Rob_phillips. As the summer went on it got worse and worse. This year I watered more and also watered at the base. Not watering the whole tree. Any type of tip browning I would spray with hydrogen peroxide or treat as a fungal problem. Both trees are super healthy and as of now show no signs of trouble and I live in Dallas Texas. Bad place to have a jm.

Things I've done that worked for me.
Shade at the hottest times of the year.
Don't water the whole tree.
If you see the tips a little brown. Spray with hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. 2 tablespoon to 1 quart of water.
Learn and be able to treat for fungal problems.
The last thing I have done is water the hell out of them when its real hot.
Doing these things have worked great for me and may also work for you.

The picture with the black on the leaves from @just.wing.it I have never seen this on maples but fore sure saw this on a sweet gum tree of mine. The roots on a sweet gum that contact the outer side of the pot get to hot from the pot being in the sun will cause black spots and black burnt leave tips just like the picture. It can do it in a matter of days if the pot gets hot enough. Not saying this can happen to a maple but sure looks the same as when the pot burns the roots touching a hot pot on a sweetgum.
