This maple appears to be experiencing some sort of stress, which is causing the change in leaf color. Is it in your garden?

Sorry, I should have said that I'm in Australia and Winter has just started which is why there's change in leaf colour.

There are thousands of named Japanese maple cultivars. Once you loose the label from the nursery there is no possible way to sort the identity out. This is akin to loosing the pedigree papers for your champion dog. You can not get the money for your dog if you don't have the papers. However, you can still enjoy the dog the same. If it still comes when you whistle, its still a dog.

You now have a generic Japanese maple, unless you can find the label from the nursery, or the receipt from the nursery when you purchased it.

Nice autumn color. I like it. Nice maple.

You're right, I was hoping there might be characteristics that could point me in the right direction but it's too hard to tell and I don't have the tag.

Thanks for your help.

Would you know what it might be Pitoon?
Sorry, I wish I could tell you something other than you have a JM there. Like @Leo in N E Illinois said no real way to know. Some are easy to tell becuase they are so different, but still there are variations. Enjoy it for what it is..... but I can tell you if it's grafted then you do indeed have a cultiver, which one who knows.

I'll check for a graft but I'm not sure how visible it'll be with how large the tree is already.

Hi - is this Japanese Maple an 'Orange Dream'?

As Leo said, it's very difficult to identify a J. maple once you've lost the tag.

Here, it's the end of spring, but we had the hootst, driest month of May since temps have been recorded and in a neighbouring street there's a garden with a maple that looks a lot like yours. In previous years, the leaves were green like many maples similar to the plain species at this time of the year, but this year it looks like yours with all the leaves at the top showing these orange hues.
