Hi All,

As some of you know I got two cork bark pine late summer..I know that some of the old needles will go yellow and all. This morning when i checked on them this is what i saw...see attached photo..Is this normal?

If you look at the pictures, the needles are yellowing in the middle instead of the tip.

Thanks

Jay

That's needle cast. Copper will control it.

really? Some of my other smaller JBP have that as well..and few of them died...i thought initially it was normal.

Do i spray copper? sorry I'm a noob...Here in Ontario, Canada...its very hard to find stuff at nurseries...it seems everything is banned from public unless its a nursery.

Yes it is sprayed on. It should be available at Home Depot, lowes or whatever big box type stores you may have up by you found in the fungicide section.

I could be wrong but this doesn't look like needle cast to me. It looks like it's bleeding yellow from the tips and I only see one yellow band not connected to a yellowing tip. Maybe there's a small amount of needle cast but I think there's another problem. I think this trees either outgrown its pot or is suffering from pollution of some sort. Where do you live?

Here's a picture of needlecast on a pine http://extension.umd.edu/sites/defa...iseases/lophodermium_pine_l.jpg?itok=SLuvShMx

And here is pollution burn

I live North of Toronto, In the Province of Ontario in the country of Canada. No where I live in china. I don't think the pollution here is that bad...There are other pines in the area...none have it..

Yes the pot is small..i got it late summer early fall...i will repot the pot in early spring.

i believe it is needle cast from the photos...

A couple of observations. There are a few yellow bands. I would spray with copper as Brian suggested. If you cannot find it use daconil. If they're are old needles or few and far between pluck them out and discard them. Clean your tweezers afterwards.

Preventive spraying on 2 needle pines is imperative in maintaining pines in any collection. I use a rotation of daconil, triforine and copper all year long. They all have a different mode of prevention. If you wante learn about fungicides visit a rose specialist. Those guys are vigilant!

Next observation. Some yellowing and eventual dropping of old needles is normal in the fall. Look closely and I see the needles which are yellowing are the older needles...maybe the 2 year old ones further up the branch. You need to pluck those this winter to allow in more air.

THank you for the information.

I can't find Daconil here in the Toronto area, Called nurseries and even the whole sale supplier. told me that I need special licenses or permits to get them. The closest thing i found with copper base fungicide is the one i mentioned above (Bordo Fungicide). I am going to spray the pines tonight.

Question though.

Should i cover the soil before i spray the copper based fungicide?

I was pulling yellow needles all afternoon yesterday. I will do that tonight as well.

Thanks.

Absolutely cover the soil.
