Hi nuts, I have my eye on a group of crab apple this spring for collection. Does anyone have experience ? (or even general repotting tips for malus in general would be great) If chopped low will these bud from bare trunk/ branching ? Looking like a week from today for the dig if possible.

crabs are weeds.

Chop low. Leave few roots. Plant in coarse substrate and place in the shade. Budding in 5 .. 4 .. 3 .. 2 .. Yup!

They ARE prone to sunburn if not well-rooted and watered; I have a 4 inch debarked section to proove it.

ISO!

Keep it Isolated! In Quarantine!

I always forget to, but apples bring so many potential pests and diseases that having a place for it alone would be beneficial.

Sorce

Apples of all sorts can tolerate drastic root reduction and trunk reduction. They will bud on old, bare wood so cut fearlessly if required.
