Get one (or more) of these. Not only does it dramatically improve the success rate of cuttings, but it keeps critters/insects away... ...and I find you only need to water once a week, even in SoCal in the summer.

Just don't put it down on the ground! Gnats and other critters will crawl up and find a well stuffed buffet, freshly prepared for them to chew down.
I lost 200+ pine cuttings because I put my dome on the ground instead of the bench. Learn from my mistakes people, I'm not making them for the giggles ;-)

Pro-tip: super glue a piece of mosquito mesh over the air units. That should keep the adult gnats out. As well as the snails.
