Found some juniper marked J. Chinensis old gold. Shimpaku is chinensis I believe. Anyone know how well these work for bonsai and are they very similar to standard shimpaku?

Hey Jason, I had the opportunity years ago to pick up a few nice specimens of this cultivar. After looking closely at them I decided I would always feel like they looked sickly with the yellow foliage...so I avoided them. Since then, I purchased a couple small hinokis that were a gold variety and I think they look unhealthy all the time...

So for me...gold/yellow forms for of conifers just aren't what I like...

That said, if you like them, I am sure there would be no problems training them for bonsai.

Agree John, sold here as landscape plants, but have gone out of style,, I think.. along with pfitzerana

If you can find some old ones at discount, these are ripe for grafting on shimpaku

look for super overgrown 5 gals , they dont want to move up in pot size and will discount heavily

good luck
