Walter,
I met Jennifer at the 4 Seasons Bonsai show a couple weeks ago.
She's great!
These jack pines are pretty interesting.
Do you plan on them back budding or do you think they will need branches grafted on?
I pass up a lot that look like these because of the long leggy branches.

They will not bud back and the branches are just right. We have endless experience with Scots pines which are very similar, only have longer needles. The length and density is perfect for now. The rest is a matter of time and styling skill. Jack pine should be the most popular material for bonsai in the USA.

Looking at the bark I feel that what you have is a very young tree. Sure it will bud back. Mine are 90 years old. and have very rough old bark. I have not seen any buds at all like yours in three years.
I get them on all of my jacks.
Dont know how old they are but they are old.
A branch I removed from one had 48 growth rings.
If you hack one back real hard, like the one I have I found growing in a ditch that was hit with a brush hog every 5 years or so will back bud on old wood too.
Of course I follow your feeding and watering regimen precisely.
Also have you noticed that the candles continue to elongate up until winter?
I'm noticing that even after they set buds the things still grow. Making for longer internodes between needles.

Well if mine bud back contrary to my expectation I will take it. Scots pines look and feel very similar. They would never bud back - old trees that is.

I'm just very curious about other peoples interactions with jack pines.
Like I said the one I have that has back budded on old wood got hit with a mower and looks like it only had one branch left.
Maybe it was a last ditch effort to save itself.
I know one thing for sure.
I'll be watching these 2 threads of yours closely.
I'm hoping my questions don't seem too rude.
