You've got a nice start. I think the Hillier's have the best foliage of all the elms. And I've found this year that they air layer faster than anything else I've tried, with the possible exception of a pyracantha. You might think about a ground layer to get a better nebari going.

Thank you. I agree the nebari needs some work. It does have some surface roots that look ok but they are kinda covered in the pic with fertilizer and medium. I have not preformed any air layers or ground layers. I have am looking at buying a couple nuresy trees and practicing. How long did it take for roots to begin to show?

Four weeks from start to separation. But, I'm in California.

You probably won't need much wire for these - they grow so fast and have tiny internodes that clip and grow is really effective.
