My big Japanese larch pre-bonsai has some browning tips on the ends of about a third of new needles. I just repotted it about 3 weeks ago out of a nursery can into a grow box, just sawing the root ball down to fit and teasing out the edges, then filling in the voids with aggregate mix. It is in full sun most of the day, and temps have been in the 70s during the day. Is this probably drought stress and, if so, should I stick it in filtered shade?

Morning sun, afternoon shade should help you avoid this problem.

Yes and yes, probably drought stress and transplant shock as you cut the roots!
