Very nice Brian...will enjoy watching you develop this one further.
I have pine bark and Arakawa. The leave shape and growing habits are the same. There's not much different with my untrained eyes. Like you I will be air layer a few in a couple weeks.Brian, would this be the same as your arakawa? It was sold as a JM Hubble's Super Cork Pine Bark from MrMaple. I plan on air-layering out of the graft this season.

Valavanis (international bonsai) has nice seedlings, but not exactly cheap. I believe he grows them from seed.Would be great to know a source for Arakawa rooted cuttings or seedlings, don't know of any myself.
More likely, from cuttings.Valavanis (international bonsai) has nice seedlings, but not exactly cheap. I believe he grows them from seed.
He indicates they are actually from seeds. Thus, they're "rough bark" Japanese maples and not true Arakawa.More likely, from cuttings.
I may have to if nothing pops. My preference would be to strike some cuttings from this one for grafting later, which I have not tried.Brian, considered root grafts to front and back? Your tree is coming along nicely. Trying to take cuttings from my Arakawa to place root grafts in the future, not many are taking.
