like the title says..got this tree for 30 dollars today it has 5 1/2 base its very much alive ....any future cuts are welcome

Do you know how to layer a maple?

Also, has some bad reverse taper, almost a double hour glass, but if you chop the trunk and layer to develop a better base you might be able to make something interesting out of it.

For that price it might be a good tree to experiment on.

You need to investigate how much more the deadwood on that is then plan accordingly.

As it is, I can see why you thought it is a "cheap" purchase but IMHO it is not. Sorry.

How's the top branches look.You could have some small stock made from layering in spring when the foliage starts to harden.I did it this year.Was ready to separate in late summer.
