Should be cutting some of the vertical growth? Seems like they would just keep getting tall and stay skinny. Suggestions? What should I be looking to do on these little guys.. 20200426_170528.jpg20200426_170455.jpg

Top growth is the fastest way to gain trunk thickness. I have some young Japanese maples that I have chopped low, just above the first branch, an some where I have left a “sacrificial leader” that I will cut off later.

The left trunk on the first tree looks like a good sacrificial leader, and the right one could be kept pruned to develop ramification. The second tree is pretty plain, I’d chop it.
