I picked up this little pagoda Japanese holly at a small local nursery while we were up in North Carolina. They’re very hard to find locally back at home and online they are small sticks in a pot for $30+. I haven’t had the chance to do anything with him yet and he’s just been chillin on the bench past couple weeks.

Anyway, I noticed an issue yesterday and worried it might be something serious due to the fact these guys are very susceptible to black root rot and it’s about that time of year. I noticed some of the leaves turning yellow and dropping. Didn’t think anything of it. Now, noticing the growing tips have a yellow tinge, the underside of the leaves have a spottiness to them. This makes me wonder if this is the first signs of root rot. He’s definitely pot bound, but the mix he’s in is pretty water retentive. From what I’ve read, there’s little to nothing you can do once they get it.

I’d love if anyone could confirm my thoughts and any suggestions on best course of action. Hopefully I’m not SOL as I was really looking forward to working on this harder to find tree. It’s definitely not been my growing year.
