I’ve seen this Stewartia at the nursery for a few months now. I’m tempted to take it home but it’s 100.00. Those in the know with this species, does it seem worth it?

What gallon size is that pot? $100 is not a crazy price for that here on LI,NY if its at least a #4 pot. Not the best price, but understandable. Of course everything here is pretty expensive.

looks like a 3-5 gallon pot to me thats why i guessed #4 (16 litters). Still seems like a reasonable price.

Nuts it really didn’t look that big!

If you can afford to buy it. I would.

it is nuts doesn't look as big as 3 home depot buckets or 15 gallons of milk.
WhoTF decided gallons is the way soil should be measured?

Electrical resistance would depend more on the mineral content
Cubic meter is probably most universal?

If it makes you feel better, the S. Monadelpha is superior for bonsai to the S. Pseudocamellia…though this one looked more monadelpha.

what he said. Pseudocamelia has bigger leaves but I have seen on and it does seem like it could be worked with.

I found and purchased a different stewartia. It’s less ramified but has a larger trunk than the tree initially posted. Total height is around 6’. The grower says it’s a monadelpha but didn’t seem sure, so we’ll find out down the road.

Since it was dug out of the ground and I might be moving, I had to pot it up. I opted to build a grow box 19”x19”x 10” deep and filled it with a 50/50 mix of sifted pine bark and pumice. Its heavy but I wanted something sturdy..

The plan is to see what happens this spring. If growth is vigorous I’ll trim the branches in June-July. If it’s slow to recover it will be left alone.

Late spring ‘22.

Tree appears healthy. I believe it is pseudocamellia, not monadelpha.

The tentative plan is to chop it at the tag indentation a ways up the trunk. Also to shorten the side branches. The long term plan is to go big with this one.

New growth has started to come out below the lowest branch. Right where it is needed.
