Pardon my lack of knowledge, but I figure you all would have some helpful opinions. What steps would you take first with this tree?

First some questions for you which will help guide your decisions

Do you like the size of the trunk of this tree as it is now or would you want it thicker?
Do you like how tall it is or would you prefer shorter?
What features of the tree drew you to it and that you like in particular?

As is, it might make for a decent literati (long thin trunk) and would probably be the quickest way to a tree.
Or you can go the slower route and do something different

At the appropriate time for repotting of course

I looked up the next Blue Corn Moon🤣, not for another 2 years...maybe that's still a good time!

Yeah, I know the pot is an issue, but the tree came in it, and looks newly repotted. I'd most likely go the literati route, just by personal preference. Unless there is some obvious pruning that suggests otherwise.

Dont worry about the pot, its fine for now. When you find a more fitting one, change it at the next repotting time
