Spring down here so seedlings are growing. I decided it was time to pot on one batch of JBP today.
Just letting others know how I do this in case anyone is interested.

I've learned over many years that cutting roots at this stage produces much better nebari. I tried seedling cuttings for a few years but results were no better than this root shortening and seems to take longer so I now just chop roots short to promote natural lateral roots.

You can see that I cut just below the upper lateral roots where possible but even if there are no visible laterals it is safe to chop as young seedlings are programmed to grow roots.

Nice write up, thanks!
I do this in year two with no terrible results.
I have another tray with around 50 more JBP seedlings. They will get transplanted a few at a time as I have space on the benches. Sometimes I don't get some transplanted for a year, occasionally 2.
In all cases roots get a good, hard trim to promote good lateral roots to produce nebari.
As you say, No ill effects transplanting and root pruning for at least a couple of years.
