The tree had a normal root ball from a round training pot. Seller wanted to ship without pot and I didn't have a properly sized round pot, or any decent pot. So I cut down a rectangular flower pot today.

I didn't touch the trees roots, they are potted in small granularity akadama. I added medium sized burned clay and pumice mix.

Should I get a larger pot, is the current one too shallow? It is roughly the size of the old root ball but maybe a tiny bit less high.

I plan to do a proper repot spring 2023, and keep it frost free this winter

Love to see innovation! (Lots of trees are delivered sans pots, but usually smaller ones 😎)

A couple things.

It looks like either the tree is tilted up up a bit in the third photo, or the tree is too high. Its ok to take a little media off the bottom to make the tree fit.

The media that was added to fill the spaces in the corners is larger and seemingly different composition then the media the tree was planted in originally. If so, this isn’t a good situation…. as the water will run through the larger, outer media fairly quickly, leaving the moist inner core surrounded by dry media. To fix this folks tend to water more.… causing a number of situations that have damaged many trees planted similarly.

The solution is to match the medias so each dries similarly.

cheers

Thank you for the suggestions @Deep Sea Diver. I bought the smallest grain akadama our local dealer had, and moved the tree over to this. I also sacrificed another flower pot so I didn't have to prune the bottom of the roots. It will soon be winter here.

(This is apparently from Murakawa nursery in Saitama. Mr meriggioli imported it to Europe. I haven't bought his book yet but maybe I will ask Santa :) )

The OP is in Sweden.

International shipping of trees requires you or the seller to meet U.S. import restrictions, that include a two-year quarantine and bareroot at entry to U.S.

Much better! Once the tree recovers robustly and you get a handle on its needs. A shallower pot could work. Yet your winters are pretty long and tough.

But your new house may give plenty of wintering over options!

Anyways getting Andrea Meriggioli’s Maple book was the best Christmas bonsai present ever.

Cheers
