I got this Japanese Maple Kiyohime last summer and trunk chopped it this spring before the buds leafed out. I was worried initially in the early and late spring, because it only pushed out a few leaves but now its growing like a weed.

The chopped I made for the branch that would be the new leader snapped as I accidently dropped the tree! So the current leader was supposed to be a secondary branch and subsequenlty turned into a cascading style as I am letting the tree grow freely. :p

Next spring, I plan on ground layering the trunk because the graft is very apparent.

Let me know if you have any comments/thoughts!

AB, sorry to hear about the mishap. If you want to make a cascade out of it, I would suggest to change the planting angle so that the trunk has a more dramatic incline towards the side it is cascading to. Consequently I would then make the cut of your air-layer at the proper angle.

I would start over next year and chop. You have a nice side branch going. Chop into that skinny branch growing out of the top.

I'm going to go with the flow and see how it goes with the cascade style and learn from the process.
