I've got an opportunity to buy this JBP for $800.00 I personally thought that was steep for this material. It came from Ishi's. I don't want this to turn into a debate over throwing down money for stock, but please tell me what you think about this material. I also could buy the White Pine in the background, but I'm not as fond of it.

I don't think I would spend my money on it, there is no style that jumps out at me, from the picture.

Keep it green,

Chris,

It's only fair that I bite ;)

I presume this is the only pic you have of this material?

If you purchased it, what are your plans for it?

Definitely Bunjin. I would take that right branch and bring it down the trunk line a little, and wire out the top to a Bunjin/Shakan style. A person I respect recommended even taking that lower branch completely off. This is an old Black Pine, and the movement in the trunk was wired in long ago.

That is wayy spendy....I wouldn't buy it, but the white pine on the other hand if it was priced reasonable could be a killer tree. my 2cents.

Need to see more pictures. What does the bark, base look like, how old is it, any decent branching on top ?

I agree. I would like to see white pine foliage on that Black Pine trunk. The white pine in the background is grafted onto Black Pine.

Good branching up top, Flaky bark. It's probably at least 30. I'm not sure if Ishi grew it himself or not. The base primarily flares itself out to the right. I can find better deals I'm thinking now. Maybe give Don Blackmond a call. I'm looking to upgrade my works in progress collection.

I bought a Crab Apple from Don, and he is one fantastic guy.

You should look somewhere else... tho the piece of material is nice... the price does not match the tree. The white pine in the background is also nice but if it doesn't speak to you don't buy it.

The good news is you looking in the right places :)

Please excuse the quick and crude vert, but this is one possible way to go with the tree. I'm off to donate some money at one of my favorite tribes casinos.

keet it green,
Harry

I am with Jason. Not sure the JBP is worth that kind of money. I would prefer the JWP, but if that doesn't grab you, then save the $800 for something that does :)

Your kidding right? You'd choose that JBP for an outrageous price over that JWP which I would assume by your statement is about the same amount...though in my heart of hearts know differently. Because if it is the same price, then the world has turned upside down and the universe is about to implode.

To answer your question directly...yes there is something in that JBP...but nothing near as formidable as what lies in the other tree.

Well last time I was at Maruyama's bonsai nursery in Sacramento (in June), they had brought in a bunch of really nice JWP. There were some comparable to this one for $650 though maybe smaller in size.

I know. I do like the white pine, but it's well up into the 4 figures. Maybe I'll just save some more.

LOL! I'm digging Virginia Pine down here, so maybe I'll just stick with those (FREE!!!!). I guess for the kind of money we're talking about I could fly to Colorado and dig something up.

Don't count on it.... collecting can be an expensive endeavour (but a total blast!).... the cost is mostly in time and fuel.... amongst other things like lodging and food... flying isn't really ideal you still need to get to the trees so best to drive. Then you have to get them home... if you are planning on mailing them its best to wait a little while.....
