Here is a Japanese Red Pine , I got at the studio. It’s a shohin size or atleast I plan it on being that. It was repotted in spring in a Yamaaki pot. Just don’t know really where to go , it’s back budding nicely , and since I repotted it , I didn’t decandle , just pinched candles to get some back budding in other areas. Next year I plan on decandling to get a second flush, but want to know my direction first. BTW here is it’s little accent chicks and hens in a Japanese pot.
some advice?

Do you want any bigger trunk🤨? Will not happen in fancy display pot. Tree needs grow box/sacrificial leader.

Since the trunk already has some wiggle to it, you’ll want to keep that going as you grow on the rest of the tree. I am building a JRP in a similar manner, and have been working on mine for over 10 years. Here is what I would do with yours.

1. In the fall, raffia-wrap and wire the left branch and leader into the shape of the green line, pulling branches in the direction of the blue arrows.
2. Prune the top down to the red line in an attempt to prompt some back-budding along the bare area.
3. When the tree is growing strong next summer, cut the right branch off at the other red line.
4. Probably won’t candle-cut next summer, but let’s see how it’s going.

Take care when wiring, as JRP is exceptionally brittle, and will snap without warning. Raffia helps.

Cool little trunk, uncommon find.

Still growing nicely, after it’s styled , some time in future I think I want a smaller pot. Even though I like the blue with the slender red pine

Alright so I raffia and wired tonight, I will be away a decent chunk in early fall so today was a good time to start this one… It will be outside this winter unless I keep in the greenhouse , so figured now would be okay since it’s slowed down. I used raffia along the biggest bend , although I must admit I coulda used a bit more, it was just tough to leave some gaps on the small buds. The lower branch did have a small tear but I put cut seal and paste around it , so it should be good. I left the new apex and top right branch alone, too small to wire this time around.

Cropped my hand to what the goal would be to remove the right branch and cut back on the trunk.

It is because you put the first coil under the shoulder of your branch. To avoid tear, if you want to move the branch down, you put the 1rst wire above the shoulder. If you want to move it up, you put the 1rst wire coil under ->

The pine is doing well, buds fat and all ready for its winter nap…. Got its forever pot for when I repot it , not next spring but 2023.. it’s more fitting for size I want to keep it at.

As of 12/21. Since I did the wiring in august it’s kept outside next to the house on ground with windbreak.

Don’t have one for this JBP, so I’ll add it here as it was just a leftover black pine at the nursery, I did a pretty radical bend in it in October to turn into a cascade. Will be left to grow next year. Will be starting a thread on some JBP projects in spring.

4D9BE524-3B7A-410B-8C88-DE1FF1DA14EF.jpegDoin well , I like the size and aging of the bark. Nevermind the sacrifice branch. That’s coming off this year or next .. I don’t want it to sacrifice growth so much that bark starts flaking off. Angle to the left slightly informal

It was sick, likely fungal but it’s bouncing back notice the green on bottom part of brown needles. It looks a lot worse than it is… I took wire off it was choking the left branch .The right branch actually was even worse anyway so I cut it off..The pot isn’t really great either for drainage so that’s changing too. 2244791F-B7B6-4AC3-A0CC-97D03EB37BC2.jpeg

Definitely looks fungal.
I recommend applying Bonide infuse systemic granular in the spring during bud break to all your trees. During this time the trees are taking up a ton of water through the roots so the the systemic is rapidly absorbed into your plants and inoculated against diseases.
Also recommend spraying with somthing like clearys 3336 and daconil preventatively. Its good to alternate so the fungus doesn’t adapt to whatever you are spraying.

I did all that already .. it’s in recovery now.. I used a biofungicide to boost the trees own immune system. I don’t touch the harsher stuff not trying to get lymphoma some day.
