Here is a J. Virginia that I bought last weekend. It has passed through the hands of Owen Reich and was styled by Michael Fedducia while in the care of the president of the Greater Louisville Bonsai Society. The first photo was when it was styled 2 years ago. The other photos are at my house.

Cool tree!

I would suggest that you consider grafting. Red Cedar foliage can get pretty lanky, and make it hard to get tight compact foliage pads.

What are your plans for this tree?

Thanks for sharing!

I don't see this NOT working.

I dig it.
Being anti-graft and really digging this species, I would love to see where it can go natural, especially with such a righteous start! Best bones I seen yet!

Very cool.

Currently 1/2 of the tree is in native soil, in the second picture it's the right side of the trunk. This coming up spring I plan on getting into 100% bonsai soil and getting the deadwood and live vein looking better. Early fall of 2016 I'll rewire and get the afro it's sporting more in check as the framework is already set. Spring 2017 it'll be in a bonsai pot.
