This was one of my first ever "pre bonsai" back when I didn't have a clue what I was doing and kind of went of half cocked an ended up doing this which ultimately resulted in the death of my little tree.

Hahaha! It was just a garden variety azalea and I planted in a pot covered with miss and then not knowing any better I planted that miniature hosta with it which needless to say sucked up all the water and nutrients and my azalea was dead in a year...
I doubt that cute little hosta killed your azalea. Hostas are pretty much indestructable in pots. They love moisture (but will handle some dryness, too), do well in heavy soils, and will survive signicantly less then ideal potting situations...unlike azaleas. With or without the hosta, I think an azalea or other shrub would have had trouble in that pot with that soil. Fwiw, in the ground where I live (thin, rocky, dry soil), azaleas universally do better then the hostas.
Must have been the turtle...
