I will either cut these Spring shoots completely at the border ( arrows ) or partially cut them, depending on how I want the branches go to help the final image of the tree.

The arrows are pointing to the borders of the past and present growing parts which are also pruned either totally or partially this June.

I will continue let them grow unchecking until June. The purpose of letting them grow is to help the trees build up enough energy, so they will response well with pruning in June.

This time of the year is the busiest time for me due to black pine pruning!

Because of Corona virus pandemic, we had to cancel our trip to Japan and Vietnam this month. However, I have a chance to take care my black pine without rushing this year 😊

I pruned the lower thirds of the big black pine first, then switched the attention to the KBP which are much smaller. They are turning into 12 years old this year.

I will post one by one this year with before and after pruning, plucking and wiring.

1st one

Excellent! You really have your hands full with Pinus. 🦚 😁 😁
Thanks. Yes, you are absolutely right. I still has KBP and Huangshan pine seedlings to be taken care! LOL. However, pine are low maintenance comparing to other species I think.

Great work bonhe! I love all the different shapes you are cultivating.
Thanks for your kind words Wilson. I really love to work with seedlings since they gave me more creative awards than taking care the established bonsai. I also like to do free style with natural image on all my seedlings. It is I follow the wish of the tree but in my way, kind of raising the children :)
I am encouraging the people about making bonsai from seedlings. All of bonsai must be started from the seeds, cuttings or airlayering. Because of that, one should not be discouraged from raising trees from the scratches. My teacher who is 94 yo still makes cuttings for bonsai purpose.

So, I have total 28 KBP 😊
My next project is working on KBP seedlings !

I like to let you know these items are very important for me when I work not only on black pines but also on others .
- surgical gloves
- 10” long smooth pick-up
- 8” long scissors
It will be very difficult to cut the shoots resided deep inside the tree. With long pick-up to hold the shoot and other hand cut it with scissors, it will be so easy and fast!
