I grafted kotobuki on Huangshan pine on 3/13/21. It is a kind of late to do this in my area. As always, I grafted really low on the stock: grafted site was in trunk base next to root neck ! The low graft is difficult to perform but it creates the beautiful tree later on, especially if the stock’s bark and scion’s bark are obviously different. Have you ever seen the cork pine grafted on regular JBP with the grafted site way high above the soil line? It looks very bad, doesn’t it?
This afternoon, I took the plastic bags out and evaluated the grafted sites.
There was a lot of water condensation inside the bag! It is a survival sign of the graft after one month old .
The bag was removed
The previous season needles are inside the yellow line . The new needles are emerging from the new candle (inside the red line )
I put the bag back without closure : opening in the bottom.
Another grafted tree
The bag was placed back without closure
I will remove the bags completely in a few days .
The pieces of sphagnum mosses used in the past are dry now .
Lesson:
1- we can graft kotobuki on Huangshan pine .
2- Huangshan pine is an excellent stock for black pine scion: in my opinion, when I graft cork pine or Yatsubusa pine on regular JBP stocks in the past, it took me about 4 months to see the growing scion!
