Over a year ago someone mentioned that the amazingly good Kyosuke Gun books on Shoin trees were going to be translated to French and English by Maillot Bonsai. I emailed him back them and he said it was coming I believe this summer. The post was on BT (RIP) and so it is all gone. But recently got a PM from a member on this site and so I emailed him a gain. here is the reply

"The french is printing now English will be for spring there is 13 title in this collection each title need about 12500 € to translate french an d english so 26 *

and print it is a long way to pay all....

Salutations, / sincerely"

I am so hoping that this happens. I love these books and have learned a lot, but so many details are not obvious to me. I own all but I think, 2.

He has published many books, 50 to date.

I have the 12 mini-bonsai books in Japanese(1-10, mini-bonsai in 3 years and mini-bonsai tips'n'tricks)... they are quite good. Tips'n'tricks explains the ramification process of most species.

I regularly check his articles in Sanyasou (Kindai's seasonal offshot) and they are very good as well.

Hey all,

Reviving this old thread for a couple of reasons.

First, thought folks might be interested to know that there's a bonsai shop in Canada that sells the Mini Bonsai series in French. I'd been pondering the JBP volume for a while, but been unwilling to pay the exorbitant shipping costs from Europe, and unable to find any used copies online. This shop has the series in French for what is currently equivalent to $30 each USD, and shipping to the US for another $25:(https://www.acbonsai.com/en/bonsai-books-french) $55 total still ain't cheap, but much better than the cost to get it from France to the US, and I'm sure it would be a better deal if you're getting more than one book and can save on shipping.
My copy of the JBP volume arrived this week, and I'm very pleased.

Second, I'd purchased a used copy of the original Japanese edition last year and been too frustrated with the language barrier, but I know a good bit of French and it's much easier to find translations of the words I don't know than with Japanese!

So if anyone is interested in buying my JBP Japanese edition, I'll sell it to you for the $20 I paid for it plus the cost of whatever shipping method you'd prefer. If you're interested, send me a PM.

Best,
Laura

No English version in the works, though(?)

I agree the French would be easier to get through. My son is taking Japanese in college so maybe I can have him read my bonsai books to me :)

My niece has lived in Japan for seven years now. She started teaching English as a second language. And now is a manager of testing for the largest provider of English language schools in Japan, she took three years of Japanese in HS and four years, including a year of College in Tokyo.

Need to fly her back to translate for me.

Google translate falls short, less short these days, it's early performance was so awful it was comic. Idioms, and industry specific jargon are frequently translated incorrectly.

To this day Google translate German to English yields "book" for ,the German word for "leaf", and "shell" for the German word for pot.
