2 week update-

This thing is budding like crazy and it’s only been 2 weeks since I pulled this out of the ground. Little green buds popping everywhere. I’m going to let it do it’s thing for now, come back in a few months to remove the suckers.

Beautiful flowers! Long internodes in-between wagon-wheel branching can't be overcome, or there would be millions of them in bonsai. They do not bud back anywhere except at nodes. Dogbone branches resist taper. Outside of that, they are prune-able, but not trainable.

Nice one. I love lantanas. They grow fast and need pruning often to keep them in control.. I kinda like that.

Yep.
that’s a cool trunk and could end up looking really nice.
a few lantana and willows on the bench can save your other trees by giving your scissors something to do and helping you salve and control your pruning itch.

Never knew lantana had such potential — here, they’re treated as weeds to be eradicated from citrus groves & yards, so never seem to get past bushy stages.
I’ve got them wild out back, because I like them, but now really WILL be eyeing them as material!

Beautiful flowers second to none, horrible branching habits. One of the most difficult to bonsai.

Nice thick trunk on that one.
I have a few little ones I stuck in the ground to see how much they will grow.
also a couple I’m going to try to keep small and see how that goes.

I believe you! Drought conditions, nothing to further enrich the very sandy soil here, and the volunteers are still leggy & sprawling. There's a little tough one growing in a thin layer of leaf litter over concrete, though, and I'm tempted....

I urge everyone in their zone to try to tame these beasts. Us northerners are at a disadvantage because we have a shorter season and have to put up with them for the off season when they just take up protected space. In FL et al you can play with them year-around. The problems I ran into were the 90° wagon wheel internodes and long internodes and not enough season to force them to backbud closer than at each dogbone, which was ~6"+ of skinny bare branch between dogbone/wagonwheel clusters. If you had the time to constantly cut back all but one bud (like every 10 minutes) so you thwart dogbones and especially length of internode, you might develop a system that works. There are dwarfs available, too, but I have never been able to buy one. The orange & light blue flowers are my favorite. Go for it! Make History.

I dug a clump this spring with a 5" base. It sprouted like crazy and has purplish/ blue and yellow flowers. Keep an eye on the watering. Mine is THIRSTY. Miss watering by half a day and it starts to droop.

I just have some small ones, but they are thirsty and wilt sooner than anything else I have.
