I did some digging in the last few days and found a page i had not seen on conifersociety.org, nor sure if it was recently updated, i looked for something like this from them last summer to no avail. anyway, this gives some of the best info i have seen on the 14 various species of Larix Genus Conifer Society - Larix/Larch

It would be interesting to make a table with this data to look at side by side and include relative bonsai data points.

So, the reason why nobody I've ever asked has ever had an answer to how to tell the difference is that the differences are minuscule and without the cone, forget it. Especially in bonsai-size trees. If it doesn't come with a name tag, you can call it whatever you want until it has cones and nobody will ever know.

Yeah I have, and if you notice, it basically says nothing on North American species exempt that one, the tamarack, exist.
