I guess this is an exercise in the “sunk costs fallacy” I spent so much time on this air layer way up in a tree that when I unwrapped it to check for roots it was easier to cut it off even though it was poorly rooted than wrap it again.

I hope it lives.

Cool, l was just eyeing some vine maples. Glad to know they layer well.
Very well. In the woods they are more likely to propagate by natural ground layering than from seed.

I have sown seed from the same tree I pulled this layer from for several years, and have not gotten any to germinate.

I have a Japanese maple and I have been having good luck with green cuttings. 1/2 an inch has been pretty good for me. Anything larger or smaller hasn't been thriving. I am still waiting to see how my air layers turn out but I am glad to see that the large air layers are turning out well.
