I have a couple of trees that I'm concerned about.
Most all of mine are leafed out now with the exception of a few.
One, a collected winged elm that's been in its container a little more than a year, budded out but then just stopped.
The other one is a Trident maple that is acting the same way.
We did have some up and down temperatures but I don't know why some are affected and some weren't.
I included a couple of pictures and as you can see there is life under the buds, but I'm not sure how I should proceed.

The frosty weather could have simply damaged the young buds causing them to die off and create new ones. Just fertilize well and don't do too much work on them or anything that would cause unnecessary stress. At least the trident has faith, that might help.

Tridents are a fussy bunch especially in this climate. Elms and related species have a tendency to do as you have described. About ten years ago, here in Michigan, most everyone who owned a tree like this had a similar reaction of a tree that would not wake up. Most died and no one knows why. I lost a beautiful Zelkova.

Hey Brian...
So a few days later, here's what the Trident looks like.
Glad I never gave up.
I guess there's something to be said for faith after all.
