I bought a nice sandcherry on mark down a few seasons ago. I didn't know much about them but the price was right. I trimmed it low like I would a maple but it didn't back bud at all. It only grew from the tops of where I chopped. I figured I would find a place in the yard to plant it.
This spring, the sandcherry leafed out and beautiful small pale pink flowers blossomed. I was thinking, hey this will make an attractive addition to the landscape (wish I had a photo).
Next day, a bonsai bunny (or a flock of them) came along and completely stripped it except for one leaf! Because it didn't back bud before, I figured it was a goner but I kept watering it. Today, I noticed buds all the way down the trunk! Those bonsai bunnies taught me something new - that sandcherries do back bud.
