What's your least favorite thing about Bonsai ???

For me, I gotta say it's removing all the wire from a tree
that has been fully wired !!!

Arghhh !!! Sometimes it does my head in...

Wish somebody would open up a remove wire from
a Bonsai tree, store... where you could just dropped off
your tree and on the way back home you picked it up
with the wire removed !!! :)

Just spent all day on one tree, and plenty more await ...
All the wire that went on the trees at the beginning of the
season, needs to start coming off... Especially the tropicals.

Stacey,

Remove thin wire by unwinding it. Only cut off the heavy wire.

Also, you may find that if you use copper wire, it holds better. So you don't have to apply as much.

Thanks, but I'm not having a problem with wiring, or wire...
just wish the wire came off by itself that's all....
Especially when one is working on a 4 foot tall tree.

I have to agree with gergwebber here and say that my least favorite thing about bonsai is having to deal with trees that have been wasted either by personal mistakes or events out of ones control, either way its just sad.

I have 2 things I hate about Bonsai.
1: when a tree is not doing so good and I can't figure out why or when a favorite dies and
2: every moment that I am NOT doing bonsai.

Least favorite thing? The learning curve is so steep. I feel like I am trying to earn a horticulture degree. Books, lectures, taking notes, studying etc... But it also the thing I like about it because it keeps me busy and learning which keeps me young. It is the "hard" that makes it good.

On a side note I went to a guys house yesterday to collect 4 free Craigslist bald cypress trees (great score) and when I explained a little about bonsai and what I planned to do with the trees he said "That sounds like something that would really impress the ladies" I responded "You would think so but when you start talking about it to non bosai people it just comes off as really geeky"

Least favorite thing? Time. the time it takes for things to develop. I wish it were faster. I'm from NY, we are naturally impatient.

Not having every tree that I want! of course....

Other than that, all of it is a joy.

Having this affinity to tropical trees (and having lots of them & big ones too)...I hate moving them in and out of the garage every time temps dip below 50*F.

Most mentioned above plus...

1. Being eaten alive by mosquitoes!!! (they are out again)
2. TX summer heat. I love being out but being charred to a crisp is not fun.
3. Not having enough space for trees.
4. Not being allowed to put shade cloth.

There! I think I am done.... LOL :p

I am content.

Dario,

I planted shade trees to be able to be outdoors and not get burnt. So I repot in shade and relax in shade.
Hmm nothing more to say.
Good Morning.

Good for you!!! :)

See #3. I don't have space for a shade tree. If I plant one, I will lose more space and it might provide more shade than my trees need.

There are two 10 foot trees planted outside my fence (Elm and Live Oak) that I actually fear will become too big and span my yard in several years. Good or bad, I am not sure yet.

Surprised no one has answered "bonsai forums" :D

I would have to say losing trees is the worst thing for me. I actually like wiring, and while removing wire is tedious, it forces me to really look at the structure of the tree. Still, I might not mind too much if someone was willing to do it for me.

All,

I know that the thing I know that everyone should know that they like the least in Bonsai is Know-It-Alls, if you know what I mean.

Sawgrass,

I agree with you. I am not a huge fan of wiring, so undoing something I don't enjoy in the first place is probably my least favorite thing. Also, my trees that get wired look better with wire and after I slog out an unwiring, they invariably have something that springs out of place and trunks and branches that appear smaller.

Thanks for asking the question.

Regards,
Martin

I consider my trees works of art. In the winter I have to put all of my works of art away and look at empty benches all winter. Like an art gallery with no paintings is my back yard Oct 31-May1(or later).

Total Drag!!
