Both my American Hornbeam and European hornbeam have leaves that point straight down. I’ve been pretty consistent with watering only when the top layer drys out. I even dig my finger down a little to see if it’s wet/damp. This is about every 3-4 days.

The American Hornbeam is in partial shade. Was just dug Early feb and shipped here from NC.

The European is in full sun and the same soil I bought it in.

Is it possible I’m underwatering/overwatering? Or is this a characteristic of Hornbeam in the spring? Pics below. American Hornbeam is the tree with movement. All of my other trees in the same/ similar soil are fine, it’s just the hornbeams. Doesn’t seem to be any browning edges and the leaves are flat, just pointed down.

Seems to have been an under watering problem. Gave them a good soak and they perked up pretty quick

I believe it is possible, especially this time of year, especially with a tree so healthy, to feel a damp top layer, whilst the rootzone has used all it's moisture.

I'm in Seattle. We definitely don't have an underwatering problem :D . The foliage has always been tipped downward on mine, and seems consistently healthy but it's my only one so -insert shrug emoji here-
