Am I the only one that can't find this post? There are a lot of posts to go through.
I'll look and see if I can find it. It may have been at bonsaiTALK. I think I still have all the virtuals though.

If you wish to attract the likes of someone like Walter Pall, then the threads of the forum will have to do better than this over the last few weeks...
If you were lucky enough to have one of your trees posted here, I mean no disrespect, it's just to show a point of view for someone that is a professional and making the time to come here and talk about these.....
These are the facts... you decide.
One very important caveat here.. Walter Pall's trees are beautiful. Some of the most beautiful natural bonsai in existence. So much so, that some, if you did not see the pot, you would not be able to tell that they are bonsai. Although this is a very beautiful side of bonsai, for the most part and in many bonsai exhibitions, do not expect to win any prizes. Now, if you have Walter's skill, find some incredible material and develop it for 10-20 years and then enter it. You may walk away with a prize. However, and this is fact, most of the time, a perfectly manicured, "japanese style" bonsai will be walking away with the prize. People may love the more natural entries..In fact, the judges may, in their own minds, like the natural looking tree better, but in the end, the "perfect tree" is going to win the prize. If you do not believe me, go to a bonsai show.. if it comes down to a perfect japanese pine with perfect foliage pads or a juniper with the like, against a natural style tree, see which one gets the prize.
I want to say that I am not taking any sides here. I believe that you need to do what makes you happy and also what the material you are working with will lend itself to. However, if winning bonsai exhibitions is your main goal. Then the "cookie cutter" route would probably win many more competitions than a natural looking tree.

My interpretation of that burn:Interesting coming from the man whose junipers all look alike...and that's a fact!
The karaoke bar forum is what I meant. As I recall.
We really don't know anything about any of this for sure unless Walter decides to tell us.
The thing that still amazes me about the Karaoke Bar controversy: This was a part of the forum that you could only get to if you directly made the choice to do so, there were no notifications in the New Posts section of the forum so people had to go looking for trouble---if that's the way you choose to look at it, you shouldn't bitch if you find it.
Secondly; It kind of reminds me of the early days of the porno industry when things like Deep Throat and Behind The Green Door were produced and released into the theaters. In order for people to have an opinion they first must have seen one of these movies. No one forced them to do so and the argument that they thought it was their civic duty to understand what this was all about?---after a dozen or so trips to the porno shop,----doesn't hold a lot of moral credence.

lol...Is this some sort of juvenile attempt at throwing my trees into the japanese traditional arena..If so, thank you... What you may want to do is re read my post. It mentioned about doing what makes you happy with the caveat of being aware that if you do go a more natural route, the odds of winning most bonsai exhibitions are not as great as with a more strictly styled tree. I believe the probelm here is that people sometimes have trouble accepting what is.. I am not saying that the way bonsai exhibition criteria should be changed. I am saying that is just the way it is. Things might change in the future. I, personally, do what makes me happy. My first priority is not bonsai exhibition.

Hi Vance,
I just thought I'd add a little factual input to this thread...
Here is the thread Walter Pall posted about this issue, and why he would stop coming to this forum.
http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?8999-Hiow-does-one-shut-off-the-Karaoke-Bar
And also if you read this, and read back thru the posts made when the whole fracus was going on, you'll know that these bar posts were showing up in the "normal" sections of bonsai nut. So even those of us who did not desire to see the Bar postings, were subjected to seeing things we DID NOT go looking for. I never once visited the Kbar, but yet during the server issue, saw some things that I wish I had not.
Please take this as intended, I do not wish to stir the pot, just presenting the facts.

Since I started a bashing fest let me just say that eventhough the trees look good the display of them is pretty poor. The only wood stand is too small and inappropriate and pots are not stands!
I have no caveat.....
