so Just for fun last year I tried to air layer a 3" diameter lilac just to see if it would work. At the end of the summer i chopped it off the mother tree and threw it in a pot. The tree looked pretty weak and i figured it was a bust so i basically forgot about it. Well winter came and now its early spring here in North dakota and everything is budding. I was going through all my winter live or die and found my Lilac is loaded with buds.

so I guess my first question would be - should i leave the plant alone for the year and let it get strong or can i start working the plant right away.

next is im not sure what to do for styling. Can it lend itself to something as is or should I do a trunk chop to add more taper, create a plan for the tree and stick too it?

Leave it alone for at least a year to recover.

Typically lilacs need to be larger bonsai as the leaves and blooms only reduce so much.
