Picked up this little maple seedling off eBay a few months ago for practically nothing. It was a rescue from a nursery that was consumed by the wild fires. When it came in it was just crammed in a box with most of it branches snapped and it's leaves were turning black from a fungus. So I defoliated all the leaves Because they were dying from the transport anyway. I know it's October and you don't want to do that this late but were in Texas do it really doesn't apply to us. 95 deg here and still sunny. . I've fed it some bonsai pro high nitrogen and gave it a spot where it gets evening sun for 3-4 hours. Just the last three days the tree had begun to sprout new leaves vigorously. We prob won't see fall temps till around dec-ish do I think I'll see red leaves then. I was a little nervous to get a maple because I've tried a trident here in Texas and it was pure hell It's really just to hot and we don't have a strong enough winter for maples , but this little seedling may prove me wrong!

I don't recognize the species so I hope it is a hardy one if tridents don't do well there.
Given you still have plenty of warm the tree should grow new leaves before winter. Sometimes when I have done late defoliation the trees just shut down early but grow again next spring.
