Was reading the Bonsai Today Master Series on Junipers about creating Shari. He mentions finding, and not cutting the live viens you want to keep. I am very new to Bonsai so bear with me. How do you find a live vien? Thanks, Joe

Before you start to try and find the live vein on the stock you want to work on one needs to clean off the old flaky bark with a small wire brush (almost like the type people use to clean their barbecue grills). You need to do this very carefully so that you do not damage the cambium. Usually the old bark is just removed until you see the smooth red bark and dead trunk areas of the juniper underneath all that old flaky bark. Now you can go about to find the live veins which manifest themselves as raised "channels" on the trunk and its usually connected to major branches. On a trunk with no deadwood it is sometimes more difficult to find these live veins but with a little bit of practice it becomes easier. Check out the new Linsay Farr videos where they explain how these live veins they ceate can be used to contort the trunk.
